Make authentic Stroopwafels at home

Stroopwafels are known worldwide as a delicious treat from Amsterdam. Although there are many variations of stroopwafels available nowadays, the authentic recipe from our bakery, the oldest bakery in Amsterdam since 1898, is definitely worth trying. We have adapted this recipe to be easily made at home!

To make authentic stroopwafels, you will need the following ingredients:
For the dough:

  • 250g flour
  • 130g butter
  • 75g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon dried yeast
  • 50ml lukewarm milk
  • Pinch of salt For the syrup:
  • 260g brown sugar
  • 125g butter
  • 100ml heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm milk in a separate bowl.
  2. Add the yeast mixture, butter, and egg to the dry ingredients and mix until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  4. While the dough is rising, prepare the syrup. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat. Add the heavy cream and cinnamon and stir until the mixture thickens. Set aside to cool.
  5. Heat a waffle iron over medium-high heat. Roll out the dough into thin circles and cut them into waffle-sized pieces.
  6. Place the dough on the waffle iron and bake until golden brown.
  7. Cut the waffles in half to make two thin waffles. Spread the caramel syrup between the two waffles and press them together.
  8. Allow the stroopwafels to cool and the syrup to set before serving.

The authentic recipe from 1898 for stroopwafels is a delicious and nostalgic treat that will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. In our bakery, we prepare fresh Stroopwafels by hand every day, but it's also fun to try making them at home!
